Early Years (3 – 4 years)
Children can start in nursery from the term that they are 3 years old and then move up to transition in the September after they turn 4 years old. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum where children’s learning is planned for in terms of prime and specific areas of development. The prime areas are important because they lay the foundations for children’s success in all other areas of learning and of life. These are personal, social and emotional development, physical development and communication and language. The specific areas provide the range of experiences and opportunities for children to broaden their knowledge and skills. These are literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design.
Our aim is to create a secure, stimulating and happy environment in which children are helped to develop their potential as individuals and as members of the school community. We instill a positive ethos that reflects the whole school’s commitment to high achievement, good relationships and equality of opportunity for all pupils. Children learn through play and experiences. We provide plenty of opportunities for structured and guided play as well as teacher led carpet times. We continue to provide opportunities for learning through play in our transition class alongside a more structured day of formal lessons. Throughout our Early Years the children are taught by their class teacher for the majority of subjects but they also benefit from specialist teachers for French, PE, art, drama and music. Children’s learning is closely monitored, recorded and regularly shared with parents.
