Key Stage 2 (7 – 11 Years)
Children continue through our Prep School from key stage 1 into key stage 2; Years 4, 5 and 6. Teaching and learning in Key Stage 2 prepares the girls both emotionally and educationally for entrance examinations into secondary school. We continue to provide specialist teaching in mathematics, English, science, French, PE, art, drama and music with the humanities, RE, ICT and PSHCE being taught by the class teacher.
Girls are encouraged to study hard and take ownership of their own learning; they know how well they are doing and what they need to do to improve. Our preparations for secondary school examinations begin in year 4 where the girls have weekly lessons on verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. Additionally, past examination questions will be completed as a whole class. In years 5 and 6 the girls continue to work on their verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills and complete past English and mathematics test papers on a regular basis. As the entrance examinations get closer we teach the girls in very small groups working on their individual areas for academic improvement as well as interview skills. By the time the girls sit their entrance examinations, they are well grounded, well prepared and confident in their abilities.
We work very closely with parents throughout key stage 2 to ensure that each girl applies to the right schools for them in terms of their personality, learning style and academic ability. Once the examinations are over the girls enjoy a residential trip to Flatford Mill and their year culminates in an extravagant drama production.
